What we will be learning this week - 21st of November 2016

This week's sounds are ou, oy and oi, and we will be continuing with our Read, Write, Inc storybooks.  Every day we are discussing our Big Writing which we will write on Friday.  We are writing a diary entry, imagining that we were there when the Great Fire of London started.  Please talk to your child about what they will write so that they are ready to do their Big Writing on Friday.  We are using our imaginations to take ourselves back in time and imaging what we could see, smell, hear and what we were doing and what we then did.

The programme Magic Grandad has helped us to see what it may have been like in 1666.  If the children wish to watch it at home, here is the link:

In Maths we are learning to add and subtract 2 two digit numbers using bead strings and 100 squares to help.  We are reviewing tens and ones in two digit numbers.

In topic and Science we are going to learn about the uses of fire, as well as the dangers of fire.

Please keep practicing the words for the Christmas show with your child.

Christmas Show

Rehearsals for our Christmas show are already underway.  Year 2 have a very important role in the Christmas show as they are the actors.  I am sending home their lines to practice at home.  Please let me know ASAP if your child will not be in school for the show.

The Year 2 Bakers of Pudding Lane!

Last week we imagined we were bakers in Pudding Lane.  We made traditional jam tarts from scratch.  We used our mathematical knowledge to weigh and measure the ingredients and we were scientists by investigating how the states of the materials changed.

After all of our hard work we enjoyed eating the delicious jam tarts!

What we will be learning this week, 14th of November 2016

This week in Literacy we will beginning our new Literacy programme Read, Write, Inc.  All children will be working on storybooks for their own level.  They will be doing sentence work, grammar and developing their creative writing skills.  We will also be learning about writing a diary entry in preparation for next week's Big Writing.

This week's sounds are air, ir, ou and oy.

In Maths we are measuring length in centimetres and metres, and we will be learning to use vocabulary associated with position, direction and movement.

In topic we are continuing with the Great Fire of London.  We will be learning about Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn.  In Science we are learning that the properties of materials make them suitable for different things.

Halloween

In the Halloween show Year 2 performed a dance to the song Thriller. They worked very hard learning the dance and were extremely enthusiastic in all of the rehearsals!  I'm sure you agree that all their hard work paid off and they did a brilliant performance.

We also made black cat biscuits.  We investigated how to change powder into a liquid and then we discovered it can then set to a solid.
